Unrelenting demolition of Hindu temples
My motion to debate the unrelenting demolition of Hindu temples in the country which has angered Hindus here and abroad has been rejected by the Deputy Parliament Speaker.
The rejection is unfair, undemocratic and against all decent norms of fair and adequate debate in a democratic society. Parliament is the place for elected representatives to bring up issues of public importance but urgent motions for debate are routinely rejected a off-handed brutal manner that makes a mockery of democratic practices.
The speaker has shut out an issue of great importance by not allowing a full and frank debate thus preventing the government from making a stand orpolicy statement of its attitudes to Hindus in the country. By denying the motion the goverment has swept another issue of great public importance under the carpet.
I had moved a motion in Parliament on 1st November 2007 to debate and out an end to the unrestricted and wanton demolishment of Hindu t emples. The spate of demolition is unconstitutional, criminal, despicable and unrelenting. It has been going unrestricted for several years and has become worst in recent months.
On 30th October 2006 two temples in Selangor were issued with demolishment notices. One temple the 100 over year old Sri Maha Mariaman temple in Kampung Jawa, Shah Alam was brutally demolished by about 500 police, FRU and enforcement unit personnel. Also 250 squatter house were demolished including a surau but the surau has been given an alternative land to be relocated.Indian gangsters were also mobilized by private developers to instill fear among the devotees. The temple is now completely demolished and deities smashed up. The police have told devotees that they have a shooting order to shoot (unarmed) devotees on sight.
The demolition was done without proper notices or procedures. Tractors and other machinery were used to obliterate this beautiful temple worshipped by 1,500 devotees. Over 26 people were injured in the mayhem that happened there and some have been hospitalized with serious injuries.Article 11 of the constitution guarantees freedom of worship. Further depriving Hindus of their place of worship is a serious violation of human rights. Demolishing places of worship without just cause is a criminal offence under the Malaysian Penal Code.
But despite numerous appeals and protest the demolition continues relentlessly. Over 300 temples have been demolished this year and many more under threat of demolition. We must put an immediate stop to this planned and purposely executed program to demolish Hindu temples in the country.
The demolition has deeply hurt the 2.5 million Hindus in Malaysia and we want an immediate end to this unmitigated slaughter of our religion and culture. We deserve to be treated as humans and our rights respected or you stand condemned before the world.

Dear YB Kula,
I hope the DAP can organise its own roadshows and mobilise its members nation-wide to go on publicity campaign to inform the Hindu public about destruction and desecration of temples and shrines. The ineffectiveness of the MIC and PPP in managing the issue and preventing recurrence is appalling. The presence of Indian gangsters which have been robbed of all conscience is terrible. This is BN politics. It is high time the Indians in Malaysia who are decent, law-abiding, patriotic and patient people to send clear message to BN that they will no longer accept and tolerate this type of oppression going on.

Hi YB
Will it be possible to tie the various people up in court?
The developers for various procedural errors, etc?
The developers name & the ultimate company needs to be highlighted. Immediate reaction should be a boycott of the said developers property launches. Inform HINDRAF & Hindu Sangam.
NO VIOLENCE. Lets follow the Gandhian way, silent protest.
Lets make this a Nike moment, JUST DO IT!

Kula, because of the speaker’s rejection to the issue, I suggest that DAP (and you) make a big fuss out of it. It is important that the people know about this, and that word spreads. It is unfair to the Indians that they have to put up with such blatant disregard to their religion, and I think that this shows that the rights of the minority is ignored by the “majority”.

Dear YB KULA,
I am very dissapointed with the local council and the BN & CO .Its a place of worship which was practice since 100 years and its the duty of the state govt to get the alternate land for them to practice their religion. There are so many temples in malaysia are on their waiting list to be demolished.THE DAP SUPPOSE TO BE A MULTIRACIAL PARTY BUT I DONT SEE THE REST OF THE PARTY MP’S PARTICIPATE TO CONDEMM THE UNCIVILIZED ACT BY THE MBSA ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS.BRAVO MR KULA!

There more Hindu temples in Malaysia then in India and there are more Hindu temples compares to any churches, chinese tokong and masjid put together. The truth is the kuils are being located as they wished..but if properly placed then..i think there should be no problem…further more most of the kuils are built illegall and are built on their own land ….would you like it if other places of worship are built on your land ?
